MEAN GIRLS Has Concluded Its Record-Setting Run on Broadway

The Broadway production of Mean Girls will not reopen as a result of the continued industry-wide shut down due the pandemic. The production’s final performance was Wednesday evening March 11, 2020, having played 805 performances and 29 previews in a record-setting run at the August Wilson Theatre.

Mean Girls features a book by nine-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Tina Fey, based on her screenplay for the film, music by three-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Jeff Richmond, lyrics by two-time Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin, and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw. The show opened on Broadway on April 8, 2018 following a five-week world premiere at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. in late 2017.

The Mean Girls North American tour, which had been playing to sold out houses across the country pre-shutdown since it launched in 2019, plans to relaunch this summer or as soon as performances can resume.

As previously announced, the musical is set to be adapted to a major motion picture from Paramount Pictures produced by Lorne Michaels and Tina Fey, with a script by Fey and featuring music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. More details to be announced.

We remain excited to bring this musical to the big screen, relaunch the tour and prepare for a London production. MEAN GIRLS Will Welcome Reneé Rapp as “Regina George”

Producers of the award-winning hit Broadway musical comedy Mean Girls announced today that Reneé Rapp, winner of the Best Actress Award at the 2018 National High School Musical Theatre Awards (commonly known as the “Jimmy Awards”), will take over the role of Broadway’s ultimate queen bee ‘Regina George’ starting Tuesday, September 10th. Tony Award nominee Taylor Louderman plays her final performance on Sunday, September 8th. Ms. Rapp will make her Broadway debut in the role this summer from June 7 to June 26 during Ms. Louderman’s brief leave of absence.

Lorne Michaels said in a statement, “We are so thankful to Taylor for bringing this role to life and though we are sad to see her go, we are also very excited to welcome Reneé to the cast. We believe she will be a force to be reckoned with as our new Regina George.”

 Tina Fey said in a statement, “It’s hard to imagine anyone can replace the great Taylor Louderman, but just like high school, when one Queen Bee graduates, a new one spreads her wings. I think Reneé Rapp has everything it takes to thrill and terrify us all! I can’t wait to see her do this.”

MEAN GIRLS Will Welcome Krystina Alabado as “Gretchen Wieners” beginning Tuesday, March 12

The producers of Mean Girls, the award-winning hit new Broadway musical comedy based on the popular film, have announced that Krystina Alabado will join the cast in the role of “Gretchen Wieners” beginning Tuesday, March 12. Tony Award nominee Ashley Park will play her final performance in the role on Sunday, March 10.

Krystina Alabado has appeared on Broadway in American Psycho (Vanden, original Broadway cast) and Green Day’s American Idiot. Her national tour credits include Evita (Mistress), American Idiot and Spring Awakening. She appeared off-Broadway in This Ain’t No Disco (Meesh, Atlantic), The Mad Ones(Samantha Brown, 59E59), David Bowie’s Lazarus (NYTW) and Camp Wanatachi (La MaMa). Regionally she’s appeared in Burn All Night (ART), Miss You Like Hell (La Jolla), Pregnancy Pact (Weston Playhouse) and Beautiful Room (Long Wharf). She appeared on TV/Film as Veronica in “Voltron Legendary Defender” (Netflix) and in “God Friended Me” (CBS), First Reformed and “Tyrant” (FX).
