Young actors wanted for Nuffield Southampton Youth Theatre’s entry into National Theatre’s Connections Festival

Nuffield Southampton Youth Theatre (NSYT) is looking for passionate and eager young performers (aged 13 – 21) from the local area to take part in auditions for the next production in their new season. In March 2017 the youth theatre will be rehearsing for The Monstrum, an energetic new comedy, which is the NSYT entry in to the prestigious National Theatre Connections Festival.

Nuffield Youth Theatre Director, Max Lindsay, says “National Theatre Connections is a hugely prestigious project to be a part of and we are delighted to be working on The Monstrum. It is an absolute riot of a play which will bring lots of new performance skills to young people. They will be working on physical comedy, choral speaking and finding ways to scare the audience!”

The Monstrum by Kellie Smith is a humorous and highly physical look at the issues we all face at the onset of adolescence. Set in a cold, isolated village on the edge of nowhere, it sees a disease spreading among all of the teenagers as they reach ‘a certain age’, much to the horror of their unsuspecting parents. This eternally relevant tale parodies classic Gothic horror movies providing comical and all too familiar feast for young people and parents alike.

Acclaimed playwright Kellie Smith has previously written several shows for young people, and is also the Royal Exchange’s 2016 Pearson Playwright-in-Residence. NSYT will be presenting this, her first play for the National Theatre, as part of the prestigious Connections Festival 2017. Not only will NSYT perform at their home of NST on Campus, but also at partner venue, Theatre Royal Bath.

NSYT is open to all young people aged between 13 and 21 years old living in Hampshire.  Auditions for The Monstrum will be held on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 November, from 5:30pm-8:30pm. For more information and to sign up, please contact [email protected] or call the Box Office on 023 8067 1771.
