Nuffield Southampton Theatres: New contemporary production of Pygmalion explores local accents

Over one hundred years after it was written, Nuffield Southampton Theatre’s radical new co-production explores one of the most celebrated comedies of the 20th Century, Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and puts Southampton’s diverse range of voices at the heart of the show. After a critically acclaimed national tour, Pygmalion arrives at Nuffield Southampton Theatres, Campus on 25 April and runs until 13 May.

The play is directed by Sam Pritchard (There Has Possibly Been An Incident, Royal Exchange, Fireface, Young Vic and Galka Motalka, Royal Exchange) and includes a stellar cast; Alex Beckett (W1A, BBC1, The Job Lot,ITV and Burton & Taylor, BBC4) plays Professor Higgins with Natalie Gavin (Jericho, ITV, The Syndicate, BBC and Shameless, Channel 4) as Eliza Doolittle.

Pygmalion is a brand new co-production from Nuffield Southampton Theatres, Headlong & West Yorkshire Playhouse. Witness the transformation of Eliza Doolittle in a world which can be digitally altered within seconds. Through amazing video and sound technology, director Sam Pritchard’s fearless new staging interrogates class identity and social mobility in Britain today by utilising regional accents to ask – how much do our voices still define who we are?

Joining Alex Beckett and Natalie Gavin are Liza Sadovy (Mrs Higgins), Racheal Ofori (Clara Eynsford-Hill), Raphael Sowole (Colonel Pickering), Ian Burfield (Alfred Doolittle), Gavi Singh Chera (Freddy Eynsford-Hill) and Flaminia Cinque (Mrs Pearce/Mrs Enysford-Hill)
