Shakespeare’s Globe Winter Season for 2018/19

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced  its Winter Season for 2018/19 in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Featuring two pairings of plays by William Shakespeare and his celebrated counterpart, Christopher Marlowe, this call and response season opens on 7 November 2018. Throughout the season we are also inviting today’s artists to examine, rework and elaborate on these 400-year-old provocations with new work written in response to Shakespeare and Marlowe.

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth will be directed by Robert Hastie, opening the season as a timely reminder of the destruction that can result from the quest for power, and an examination of the evil forces that can take root in the imagination of a tyrant. Robert is the Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres, where he has directed their critically acclaimed productions Julius CaesarOf Kith and Kinand The Wizard of Oz. Robert directed Michelle Terry in the titular role of Henry V at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre (2016). He also directed Breaking the Code at Manchester’s Royal Exchange in the play’s first major revival for 30 years.

Opening on 1 DecemberChristopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus will be directed by Paulette Randall, and plays alongside Macbeth. The cautionary tale examines the very nature of human curiosity and our unparalleled thirst for knowledge. Paulette’s theatre credits include Fences starring Lenny Henry (Theatre Royal Bath, West End), Gem of the OceanBlues for Mr Charlie (Tricycle) and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (Chichester Festival Theatre). Her screen credits include CasualtyThe Crouches and Holby City (BBC One). Paulette was associate director of the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and was awarded an MBE for services to drama in 2015.

Dark Night of the Soul: a feminine response to the Faustian bargain opens on 29 December. The Faustian myth continues to fascinate and intrigue, but has been appropriated by the man, the male, the masculine, with little exploration or discovery of what it means for the woman, the female, the feminine, to stop at a crossroads and ‘sell her soul’. Jude Christian will direct an ensemble of female writers including Lily Bevan, Athena Stevens, Katie Hims, Amanda Wilkin, Lisa Hammond andRachael Spence. They will respond to the provocation, with the ultimate aim of creating a chorus of female voices asking: What would you sell your soul for? Jude Christian will be performing Nanjing, a piece about identity, dispossession, and the consequences of war, in the Playhouse this week as part of Refugee Week 2018.

Ralegh: The Treason Trial, edited and dramatised by Oliver Chris, will premiere in Winchester Great Hall, the location of the original trial 415 years ago, before playing in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. The production is a  verbatim account of what played out on that extraordinary November morning, compiled and edited from sources present at the trial itself. Oliver is an actor, writer and director best-known in the theatre for his roles in One Man, Two Guvnors (National Theatre, West End, Broadway), King Charles III (Almeida, West End, Broadway), and Twelfth Night (National Theatre).

The season continues with Marlowe’s Edward II and Shakespeare’s Richard II, examining ancestral relationships and notions of identity, sexuality, desire and power. Edward II plays from 7 February 2019. King Edward recalls his lover from banishment and sets in motion a chain of events that culminate in some of the most shocking scenes in early modern theatre. Marlowe’s portrayal of Edward and Gaveston is a rare depiction of a gay relationship on the early modern stage, and a frank exploration of the tension between private pleasures and public duty.

Richard II was hugely controversial when it was first written and performed, and it strikes us today with remarkable immediacy as Shakespeare asks us to consider the destiny that we might be shaping for our ‘scepter’d isle’. The production will open on 22 February and play during a period in which we will play our own part in defining history and becoming the shoulders on which future generations will stand, as the UK’s scheduled departure from the EU is due to take place on 29 March 2019.

The Read Not Dead series continues to shed new light on Shakespeare’s contemporaries, and this year includes Edward I (first printed 1593) by George Peele. The series will also bring to life The Little French Lawyer (first performed 1619 – 1623, first published 1647) by John Fletcher and Philip Massinger, and The Tragedy of Sir John van Olden Barnavelt (first performed 1619, first published 1883) by John Fletcher and Philip Massinger. Events will be taking place over the half term period, including storytelling and workshops of Macbeth and Henry V for families.

Opening 21 MarchAfter Edward is written by Tom Stuart. Edward II wanders on to the empty stage, bloodied and confused. He has no idea where he is, or how he got here, but he does have an ominous feeling that something is wrong. A daring new play written specifically for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in response to Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II, After Edward welcomes us into a chaotic world of pride and shame. Tom has appeared as an actor at Shakespeare’s Globe in many productions including The Broken Heart, The Changeling (2015), Romeo & Juliet (2009) and Much Ado About Nothing (2007). He performed in the Battersea Arts Centre’s production of Edward IIin 2008. His screen credits include Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Psychobitches (Sky Arts), and A Good Year. Tom has been working in film, television and theatre as an actor for 14 years. His first play I Am Not Myself These Days, an adaptation of Josh Kilmer-Purcell’s New York Times bestselling autobiography, was performed by Tom at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (2015) and toured the UK in 2016.

Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank celebrates its 14th year at the Globe Theatre. Throughout March 2019, Romeo & Juliet will be opening the doors to the next generation of audiences.

2018 Sam Wanamaker Award presented at Shakespeare’s Globe on 16th June

The 2018 Sam Wanamaker Award will be presented to British theatre producer Thelma Holt CBE by Shakespeare’s Globe Chief Executive, Neil Constable, and Director, Globe Education, Patrick Spottiswoode, in the Globe Theatre on Saturday 16 June. The award ceremony will follow the relaxed matinee performance of The Two Noble Kinsmen and will be coupled with ‘The Globe Remembers’: a roll call of those who have made a significant contribution to the work of Shakespeare’s Globe and who have sadly died in the last 12 months. This year’s commemorations include Sir Peter Hall CBE, with whom Thelma worked at the National Theatre.

Actor and Director, Sam Wanamaker, spent the final 23 years of his life tirelessly campaigning, advancing research into the original Globe and planning its reconstruction. The Sam Wanamaker Award was instituted by Shakespeare’s Globe in 1994 to celebrate work which has increased the understanding and enjoyment of Shakespeare and which has a similar quality to Sam’s own pioneering mission.

Neil Constable, Chief Executive, Shakespeare’s Globe explained, ‘This year’s award is given in recognition of Thelma Holt’s long-standing career in support of international cultural exchange, especially in producing and touring many award-winning Shakespeare productions both in English and in translation. She has also been a true friend to the Globe since the days when Sam Wanamaker first had a gleam in his eye to build a reconstructed Globe Theatre.’

Thelma Holt’s name is synonymous with theatre. Once an actress, now a producer, she belongs in that small group of legendary women – Lilian Baylis, Joan Littlewood and the agent Peggy Ramsay are others – who have transformed British theatre. Her energies are deployed in many directions, but Shakespeare’s Globe has held an important place in her affections from the earliest days of the project – ever since, as she has put it, ‘Sam got me like everyone else. He had the vision and that carried you along.’

On hearing that she would be the 2018 recipient, Thelma Holt CBE said, ‘The news that I was to receive the Sam Wanamaker Award made the sun come out in my world, even though it appeared to be raining heavily elsewhere. I and anyone else who was involved so many years ago remain proud of the work we did when a madman called Sam Wanamaker had a brilliant idea. 

‘Every obstacle that was put in his way was shot down in flames. However hard we may have worked on his behalf was nothing compared to what we received in return. Everything I learned with Sam I have continued to use in my own career and indeed now share with young people coming into the profession. 

‘On the road to achieving this magnificent venue (Shakespeare’s Globe), there were many near-disasters. All they ever meant for Sam was a huge rush of adrenalin as he went into battle. I and so many friends were proud indeed to be his foot-soldiers, and it is thrilling today to come to the Globe and see the great work that continues to be done to the lasting credit of the country that gave birth to William Shakespeare.’

Thelma Holt follows former illustrious recipients of the Award, the first of whom was Dr Rex Gibson, creator and editor of the Cambridge School Shakespeare; and include Janet Arnold for her pioneering research into Elizabethan clothing; Professor Stanley Wells, Shakespeare scholar and former Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust; John Barton, founding member of the Royal Shakespeare Company; actor and director, Mark Rylance; and last year, to mark the Globe’s 20th anniversary, 25 volunteers who have each given over 20 years of service as Stewards at  Shakespeare’s Globe.

Thelma is a graduate of the RADA and co-founder of the Open Space Theatre. She became director of the Roundhouse in 1976 before joining Peter Hall at the National Theatre, where in 1987 she received the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement for her international work. Her many theatrical successes as a producer after leaving the National Theatre include some outstanding Shakespeare productions: The Merchant of Venice with Dustin Hoffman in London and New York (for Peter Hall); Hamlet, with Alan Rickman in the leading role and Much Ado About Nothing, with Janet McTeer and Mark Rylance (a production which marked the return of Shakespeare to Shaftesbury Avenue after a gap of 50 years).

As Cameron Mackintosh Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford, Thelma became responsible for the university’s annual Shakespeare tour to Japan, which this year is Twelfth Night. She is an Emeritus Fellow of St Catherine’s College and became a Distinguished Friend of Oxford in 2006. As Associate Producer for the RSC she has, with HoriPro Inc, toured to Japan the RSC’s productions of Othello and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Her RSC co-productions in the West End include the five Jacobean plays, The Taming of the Shrew and The Tamer Tamed and All’s Well That Ends Well. She is currently Associate Producer on Imperium. In Japan she co-produced with HoriPro Inc. The Merchant of Venice and Anjin – The English Samurai, both directed by Gregory Doran.

Thelma was producer for all of Yukio Ninagawa’s productions that were performed in the UK for a period of 30 years, including his final memorial production of Macbeth at the Barbican and Theatre Royal Plymouth in 2017. In recognition of her promotion of Japanese theatre, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan.

Shakespeare has featured heavily in Thelma’s career, and she has been a Shakespeare enthusiast since childhood. As she has said in an interview given to the Globe’s membership magazine, ‘It was Shakespeare who made me want to act and Shakespeare who made me want to produce.’

Shakespeare’s Globe announces full casting for Othello, directed by Claire van Kampen



Shakespeare’s Globe has announced the full casting for Othellodirected by Claire van Kampen, opening in The Globe on Friday 20 July.

Sheila Atim will play Emilia. Winner of an Olivier Award earlier this year for her role in Girl From The North Country (Old Vic, West End) Sheila is returning to Shakespeare’s Globe after making her professional debut on The Globe stage in Matthew Dunster’s The Lightning Child in 2013. Sheila’s other theatre work includes The Shakespeare Trilogy at The Donmar Warehouse, Les Blancs(National Theatre) and Volpone (RSC).

Catherine Bailey will play Bianca and Doge of Venice. Catherine appeared in the Globe’s productions of Julius CaesarThe Merchant of Venice and Dr Scroggy’s War in 2014. Other recent theatre work incudes King Lear (No 1 Tour) and The 39 Steps (West End). Television includes The Crown (Netflix), Strike: The Silkworm (BBC/HBO) and Mr Selfridge (ITV).

William Chubb will play Brabantio and Montano. William’s recent theatre credits include This House(National Theatre), Racing Demon (Theatre Royal Bath), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are DeadKing Lear (Old Vic) and Lawrence After Arabia (Hampstead Theatre).

Steffan Donnelly will play Roderigo, returning to The Globe after appearing in Romeo and Juliet in 2015, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Titus Andronicus in 2014. Steffan’s other recent theatre work includes My Body Welsh (Invertigo) and Pilgrims (HighTide/Theatre Clwd/Yard), for which he was nominated for an Offie. Television work includes The Innocents (Netflix) and Shakespeare Uncovered(BBC).

André Holland will play Othello. André is best known for his roles in Academy Award-winning films Moonlight and Selma. The multi-award-winning actor’s other screen credits include 42 and The Knick. Theatre credits include Jitney (Broadway), Blue Door (Playwrights Horizons), Wig Out (Vineyard Theatre), The Brother / Sister Plays (Public Theatre) and All’s Well That Ends Well (Shakespeare in the Park).

Micah Loubon is Chorus. Micah’s past theatre credits include Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew, as part of Intermission Youth Theatre.

Ira Mandela Siobhan also joins as Chorus. Ira returns to The Globe after playing Posthumus in Matthew Dunster’s Imogen in 2014. Other recent theatre credits include The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (West Yorkshire Playhouse) and Mosquitoes (National Theatre).

Aaron Pierre will play Cassio. Aaron is best known for his role as Dev-Em in SyFy’s hit series Krypton. His further television credits include Jez Butterworth’s Britannia (Sky Atlantic), The A Word  (BBC) and Prime Suspect 1973 (ITV). Aaron’s theatre credits whilst training include Of Mice and MenCoriolanusPlatonov and The Virtuoso (LAMDA).

Mark Rylance will play Iago. Mark has just starred in the Globe’s Tony Award-nominated production of Farinelli and the King on Broadway (originally produced under Dominic Dromgoole’s tenure as Artistic Director). He was the founding Artistic Director of the Globe, acting for ten years between 1996 – 2005, playing a multitude of roles including the Countess Olivia in Twelfth Night and Richard in Richard III (Shakespeare’s Globe, West End, Broadway). Further stage credits include Jerusalem (Royal Court, West End) and Boeing-Boeing (West End, Broadway). His screen credits include Wolf Hall, Dunkirk, The BFG and Bridge of Spies.

Clemmie Sveaas is Chorus. As a dancer and actress, she has performed regularly at the Royal Opera House, Royal Ballet and is a member of New Movement Collective. She has danced with leading companies such as Phoenix Dance Theatre and Rambert. Clemmie’s recent theatre credits include Pinocchio (National Theatre), Les Enfants Terribles (Barbican Theatre) and Macbeth (Young Vic).

Badria Timimi will play Lodovica. She has most recently appeared on screen in Carnival Row(Amazon), with other television credits including Father Brown (BBC), EastEnders (BBC) and Unforgotten (ITV). Her film credits include PusherSyriana and Tim Burton’s feature film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Badria’s recent theatre work includes My Brilliant Friend(Rose Theatre Kingston), Told FromThe Inside (Royal Court) and Feed the Beast (Birmingham Rep).

Jessica Warbeck will play Desdemona. She played Hero in the Globe’s touring production of Much Ado About Nothing in 2015 and appeared in Othello (2015). Her other recent theatre work includes One Man Two Guvnors (Eastbourne Theatres) and Oliver Twist (European Tour).

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced the full casting for Barrie Rutter’s The Two Noble Kinsmenby John Fletcher and William Shakespeare, opening in The Globe on Friday 25 May. This will mark Barrie’s first production since stepping down as Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides.

Paul Stocker will play Palamon, returning to the Globe after appearing as Troilus in Troilus and Cressida in 2009. Paul’s other theatre credits include The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (West End), CoralA Thousand Stars Explode in the Sky (National Theatre Studio) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regent’s Park). Television work includes DoctorsEastEnders and The Rack Pack (BBC).

Bryan Dick will play Arcite. Bryan’s previous theatre work includes Years of Sunlight (Theatre 503), Hobson’s Choice (UK Touring), Seminar (Hampstead Theatre) and Public Enemy (Young Vic). Television includes CapitalWolf HallEric and ErnieAshes to Ashes (BBC) and The Ice Cream Girls(ITV). Films include The Numbers StationDay of the Flowers and Blood and Chocolate.

Matt Henry will play Pirithous. An Olivier Award winner for his portrayal of Lola in Kinky Boots (West End), Matt’s other theatre credits include Avenue Q (Theatre Royal Bath), The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (Royal & Derngate) and The Harder They Come (Nottingham Playhouse/UK Tour).

Jude Akuwudike is Theseus. Jude’s previous theatre credits include The Cherry OrchardThe Lower Depths (Arcola), The Royale (Bush Theatre), The Crucible (Bristol Old Vic) and Hamlet AsylumSeeker (Talawa Theatre/BandBazi). Television includes The Forgiving EarthCarol and Vinnie (BBC), In the Long Run (Sky) and Kiri (Channel 4).

Moyo Akandé is Hippolyta. Moyo’s previous theatre work includes Flowers for Mrs Harris (Sheffield Crucible), Only the Brave (Soho Theatre) and The Witches (Dundee Repertory Theatre). Television includes Vera (ITV) and Only An Excuse? (BBC). Films include Make Me UpThe Hurricane Heist and the BAFTA and BIFA nominated 1745.

Ellora Torchia will play Emilia, making her first appearance on The Globe stage after appearing as Helena in All’s Well That Ends Well in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse earlier this year. Ellora’s other theatre work includes The Treatment (Almeida) and Boys will be Boys (Bush Theatre). Television credits include The Split (BBC), Broadchurch (ITV) and Indian Summers (Channel 4).

Sue Devaney will play First Queen. Sue’s recent theatre work includes The Kitchen Sink (Oldham Coliseum), A Christmas CarolThe Threepenny Opera (Bolton Octagon), When We Are Married(Northern Broadsides/UK Tour), Our Gracie (Oldham Coliseum) and Fetish Knights (Lowry Theatre Manchester). Television includes River City (BBC), Shameless (Channel 4), Being April and Dinnerladies (BBC).

Francesca Mills will play Jailer’s Daughter. Francesca’s previous theatre work includes A Tale of Two Cities (Regent’s Park), Cyrano De Bergerac (Northern Broadsides/UK Tour) and A Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer (Complicite/National Theatre). Television includes Harlots (ITV).

The full cast includes: Moyo Akandé, Jude Akuwudike, Andy Cryer, Sue Devaney, Bryan Dick, Matt Henry, Melissa James, Francesca Mills, Kat Rose-Martin, Paul Stocker, Ellora Torchia, Jon Trenchard and Jos Vantyler.

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced the  casting for Hamlet and As You Like It, the opening shows of Michelle Terry’s first season as Artistic Director.

Opening the season on 25 April will be Hamlet, which will play alongside As You Like It from 2 May.Both written around 1599, the year the original Globe was built, these plays will be presented by The Globe Ensemble and directed by Federay Holmes and Elle While.

The 12 actors are exploring these two well-thumbed and popular plays together as an ensemble, as if for the very first time, with the unique opportunity of being able to play them in the theatrical space for which they were written.

Catrin Aaron plays Horatio in Hamlet and Phoebe in As You Like It. Her credits include The Wizard of Oz (Sheffield Crucible), Henry V (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), Sex and the Three Day Week(Liverpool Playhouse), and many productions at Theatr Clwyd including The Rise and Fall of Little VoiceAll My Sons and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Her screen credits include The Bastard Executioner,The Indian Doctor and Casualty (BBC).

James Garnon plays Claudius in Hamlet and Audrey in As You Like It. James is a veteran of Shakespeare’s Globe, having starred in over a dozen productions in the outdoor theatre and the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, including Blanche McIntyre’s As You Like It (as Jaques), Michael Longhurst’s ‘Tis Pity She’s a WhoreThe Duchess of Malfi with Gemma Arterton, and Dominic Dromgoole’s final show as Artistic Director, Pericles. His other theatre credits include Queen Anne (RSC/Theatre Royal Haymarket) and Richard III (Almeida).

Colin Hurley plays the Ghost in Hamlet and Touchstone in As You Like It. Colin is an acclaimed Shakespearean actor who has worked extensively with the Globe, the RSC and the National Theatre. His recent stage credits include Farinelli and the King and Twelfth Night/Richard III (Shakespeare’s Globe, West End, Broadway) alongside Mark Rylance. His recent screen credits include the Channel 4 black comedy series Flowers with Olivia Colman and Julian Barratt.

Bettrys Jones plays Laertes in Hamlet and Orlando in As You Like It. Bettrys’s recent theatre credits include Joe Wright’s The Life of Galileo (Young Vic), Emma Rice’s The Little Match Girl (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse), and Rash Dash’s We Want You To Watch and Joe Hill-Gibbon’s Edward II (National Theatre).

Richard Katz plays Polonius in Hamlet and Silvius in As You Like It. Richard’s recent stage credits include The Encounter (Barbican, Broadway, world tour) and The Master and Margarita (Barbican, European tour) for Complicité, Romeo and JulietAs You Like It and The Comedy of Errors for the RSC and The Lorax at the Old Vic. His screen credits include Taboo and The Honourable Woman(BBC).

Jack Laskey plays Fortinbras and others in Hamlet and Rosalind in As You Like It. Jack is known for his role as DS Peter Jakes in ITV’s critically-acclaimed series Endeavour. He also starred alongside Rupert Everett and Emily Watson in the feature film A Royal Night Out. His recent theatre credits include Lawrence After Arabia with Joseph Fiennes (Hampstead Theatre), The Merchant of Venice(RSC), Hamlet (Old Vic) and The Masque of the Red Death (Punchdrunk).

Nadia Nadarajah plays Guildenstern in Hamlet and Celia in As You Like It. Nadia made her professional debut on the Globe stage in 2012 with Deafinitely Theatre’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. Her recent theatre credits include The House of Bernada Alba (Royal Exchange Manchester), Notre Dame(National Theatre) and Grounded (Park Theatre). Nadia is fluent in eight languages: five sign and three written.

Pearce Quigley plays Rosencrantz in Hamlet and Jaques in As You Like It. Pearce has been a regular performer at the Globe since 2001, where he has appeared in productions including The Changeling with Hattie Morahan, A Midsummer Night’s Dream alongside Michelle Terry, and Matthew Dunster’s Dr Faustus. His other recent theatre credits include Simon Godwin’s The Beaux’ Stratagem(National Theatre) and The Wolf From the Door (Royal Court).

Shubham Saraf plays Ophelia in Hamlet and Oliver in As You Like It. Shubham recently graduated from Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He made his professional debut in Lions & Tigers at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, and is currently filming Bodyguard by Jed Mercurio for BBC1.

Helen Schlesinger plays Gertrude in Hamlet and Duke Frederick in As You Like It. Helen’s stage credits include Albion (Almeida), Coriolanus (Donmar Warehouse) and The Crucible (RSC). Her screen credits include The Hour and Criminal Justice (BBC).

Michelle Terry plays the title role in Hamlet and Adam in As You Like It. Michelle is Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe. Her recent stage credits include Katie Mitchell’s Cleansed (National Theatre), Much Ado About Nothing and Love’s Labour’s Lost (RSC) and In the Republic of Happiness (Royal Court). She won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for Tribes at the Royal Court.

Tanika Yearwood plays Marcellus in Hamlet and Amiens in As You Like It. Tanika trained at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her theatre credits include Tomorrow I’ll Be Twenty(Complicité), Home and Everything In Between (Kali Theatre Company) and Cinderella (Lyric Theatre).

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced Michelle Terry’s first season as Artistic Director. 2018’s Shakespeare productions include HamletAs You Like ItThe Two Noble KinsmenThe Winter’s TaleOthello and Love’s Labour’s Lost. A premiere of three new plays, a national and international tour of Shakespeare and other performances on and off site are announced together with a year-long programme of events exploring the history and future of theatre censorship, as well as a series of events looking at race, refuge and refugees in relation to Shakespeare.

Opening the season on 25 April will be Hamlet, which will play alongside As You Like It from 2 May.Both written around 1599, the year the original Globe was built, these plays will be presented by The Globe Ensemble, which includes, amongst others, the following artists: Federay HolmesBettrys JonesJack LaskeyNadia NadarajahPearce QuigleyShubham SarafElle WhileTanika Yearwood and Michelle Terry. This group of artists will explore these well-thumbed and popular plays as if for the first time, with the unique opportunity of being able to play them in the theatre for which they were written.

Brendan O’Hea will direct a tour of eight actors with The Merchant of VeniceThe Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night. The three plays will open at the Globe before setting out on a national and international tour where they will offer the audience the chance to pick their choice from the three plays, mimicking a tradition from Shakespeare’s day. A director, actor, and education practitioner, Brendan has previously performed in a number of productions at Shakespeare’s Globe including Cymbeline (2015), Measure for Measure (2015), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2014), and Henry V(2012).

From 25 MayThe Two Noble Kinsmen by John Fletcher and William Shakespeare will be directed by Barrie Rutter. Barrie is soon to be directing and appearing in his forthcoming production of The Captive Queen in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as part of the 2017/18 winter season, coproduced by Northern Broadsides. The Two Noble Kinsmen will be Barrie’s first play since stepping down as Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides. From 22 June, The Winter’s Tale will be directed by Blanche McIntyre. Blanche returns to the Globe, having previously directed The Comedy of Errors (2014) and As You Like It (2015). Winner of the 2011 Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award for Accolade and Foxfinder (Finborough Theatre), she has most recently directed The Norman Conquests, a trilogy of plays by Alan Ayckbourn at Chichester Festival Theatre. She has also recently worked at the Donmar Warehouse, Nottingham Playhouse and the RSC.

In response to Refugee Week (18 – 24 June), the Globe will present a festival of events exploring Shakespeare’s response to refuge and refugees. The week will include the premiere of Nanjing, a piece about identity, dispossession, and the consequences of war. Written and performed by Jude Christian, it tells the story of the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, frequently referred to as the Rape of Nanking. Jude’s credits include directing at the Royal Court (BodiesLela & Co.) and she is Associate Artist at the Gate Theatre, the Yard Theatre and the Lyric, Hammersmith.

From 20 JulyOthello will be directed by Claire van Kampen, starring André Holland as Othello and Mark Rylance as Iago. André Holland is best known for his roles in Academy Award-winning films Moonlight and Selma. The multi-award-winning actor’s other screen credits include 42 and The Knick. Theatre credits include Jitney (Broadway), Blue Door (Playwrights Horizons), Wig Out (Vineyard Theatre), The Brother/Sister Plays (Public Theater) and All’s Well That Ends Well (Shakespeare in the Park).

Mark Rylance is currently starring in the Globe’s production of Farinelli and the King on Broadway (originally produced under Dominic Dromgoole’s tenure as Artistic Director). He was the founding Artistic Director of the Globe, acting for ten years between 1996 – 2005, playing a multitude of roles including the Countess Olivia in Twelfth Night and Richard in Richard III (Shakespeare’s Globe, West End, Broadway). Further stage credits include Jerusalem (Royal Court, West End) and Boeing-Boeing(West End, Broadway). His screen credits include Wolf HallDunkirkThe BFG and Bridge of SpiesClaire van Kampen most recently directed Nice Fish in 2016 (St Ann’s Warehouse, New York & West End), and wrote Farinelli and the King. From 1997, she was the Globe’s founding Director of Theatre Music, creating both period and contemporary music for approximately 50 of the Globe’s productions. She is Creative Associate of The Old Vic and has continued to be the Globe Associate for Early Modern Theatre Music since 2007.

Throughout February to September, a series of events will focus on Shakespeare and Censorship. Censorship of British theatre started in 1737 and officially ended 50 years ago on 26 September 1968. This bold series of events explores censorship from historical, national and international viewpoints, and explores what the future may hold. From 12 AugustShakespeare and Race will be a festival of events which will include performances, workshops, public lectures, panels and an international conference. Curated to draw attention to and provide a platform for scholars, practitioners and educators of colour in the teaching, study and performance of Shakespeare, this festival will highlight the importance of race to the consideration of Shakespeare not only in his time, but more urgently, in our own.

From 23 AugustLove’s Labour’s Lost will be directed by Nick Bagnall in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Nick is Associate Director of the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. His previous Globe directing credits include The Two Gentlemen of Verona (co-production with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse, 2016), The Odyssey: MissingPresumed Dead (2015), The Last Days of Troy (2014), Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (2014) and Henry VI: Parts I, II and III (2013). Other credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Liverpool Everyman) and Entertaining Mr Sloane (Trafalgar Studios).

Two new plays will premiere on The Globe stage this summer. Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s Emilia (10 August – 1 September), directed by Nicole Charles, will explore the life of Emilia Bassano, whom many consider to be the Dark Lady of the Sonnets, but was also a writer, poet, mother, feminist and woman in her own right. This summer will be an opportunity to follow the elusive ‘Emilia’ as she threads her way through the canon from the ‘Dark Lady of the Sonnets’, to Rosaline in Love’s Labour’s LostThe Two Noble KinsmenOthello and The Winter’s Tale – every play in which Emilia appears, apart from Emilia the Abbess in The Comedy of Errors. Playwright and screenwriter Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s play Belongings (Hampstead Theatre, Trafalgar Studios) was shortlisted for The Charles Wintour Most Promising Playwright Award, followed by The Wasp (Hampstead Theatre, Trafalgar Studios). In 2016, she was selected for the BBC TV Drama Writers Programme and commissioned to write a 60-minute original television drama. Nicole Charles most recently assistant directed at the Globe for The Taming of the Shrew (2016). Other assistant directing credits include The Jungle (Young Vic) and The Goat or, Who is Sylvia? (Theatre Royal Haymarket).

Emilia will be followed by Matt Hartley’s Eyam (15 September – 13 October), directed by Adele Thomas. When the plague arrives surprisingly in the Derbyshire village of Eyam in 1665, the community face the moral dilemma of having to decide whether to flee and risk spreading the vicious disease or stay, protect others from the risk, but face the potential of their own slow and painful death. Adele Thomas’s previous Globe credits include Thomas Tallis (2014 & 2015), The Oresteia (2015) and The Knight of the Burning Pestle (2014 & 2015). Other credits include Cosi Fan Tutte (Northern Ireland Opera), The Weir (ETT), Macbeth (Tobacco Factory), The Bloody Ballad (Gagglebabble and Tour), The Passion and The Passion: One Year On (as Project Associate for National Theatre Wales), Under Milk Wood (Royal & Derngate), No Vacancies and Delugue (Sherman Cymru). Matt Hartley’s recent work includes Myth (RSC), Here I Belong (Pentabus), Deposit (Hampstead), winning the Bruntwood Award with Sixty Five Miles (Paines Plough / Hull Truck Theatre).

As part of a series of scenes, sonnets and songs, a unique event at Westminster Abbey, All Places that the Eye of Heaven Visits returns. In celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday, Mark Rylance will join a company of 23 actors, as Shakespeare’s plays, poetry and song are brought to life in fleeting and intimate encounters throughout the Abbey. Shakespeare’s birthday weekend will also include the Globe and Mark’s annual Sonnet Walks: Sweet Love Remember’d, a walk through Shakespeare’s London brought alive by actors. Conceived by Mark RylanceSonnet Walks: Sweet Love Remember’d will take place Saturday 28 April – Sunday 29 April, tracing routes through Westminster and the City and finishing at the Globe. This sonnet journey will culminate in Sonnet Sunday: Ten Times Happy Me (2 September). This site specific venture will give audiences the rare opportunity to experience all of the sonnets from 1 – 154 over the course of one day as we celebrate Shakespeare with our local, national and international community.

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced the full casting for Caroline Byrne’s forthcoming production of All’s Well That Ends Well opening in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on Thursday 11 January.  

Ellora Torchia will play Helena. Previous theatre work includes The Treatment (Almeida) and Boys will be Boys (Bush Theatre). Screen credits include The Split (BBC), Broadchurch (ITV) and Indian Summers (Channel 4).

Will Merrick will play Bertram. Will’s recent theatre credits include The Libertine (Theatre Royal Bath), The Ghost Train (Royal Exchange), Merlin (Royal & Derngate) and Wendy and Peter Pan (RSC). Television work includes PoldarkCount Arthur StrongAtlantis and Doctor Who (BBC). Film credits include Modern Life is Rubbish and About Time.

Nigel Cooke will play the King of France, having appeared on the Globe stage as Lucifer in Doctor Faustus in 2011, and as Exeter in Henry V in 2012. Other theatre work includes To Kill A Mockingbird(Royal Exchange), Berenice (Donmar Warehouse), King Lear (Liverpool Everyman), Pericles and The Winter’s Tale (RSC). Imogen Doel will play Paroles, returning to The Globe after appearing in The Taming of the Shrew last year. Shakespeare’s Globe has announced the full cast for the world premiere of Anders Lustgarten’s The Secret Theatre in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse directed by Matthew Dunster. As the nation’s relationship with Europe deteriorates and civil unrest grows, Elizabeth I’s spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, adopts extreme tactics to keep his queen and country safe. Set in a world of espionage, double-crossing and blackmail, The Secret Theatre asks what we are prepared to sacrifice to ensure our safety.

Aidan McArdle will play Sir Francis Walsingham. Previous theatre work includes School for Scandal (Barbican), The White Devil (Menier Chocolate Factory), There Came a Gypsy Riding (Almeida), Great Expectations (Bristol Old Vic) and Anthony and Cleopatra(RSC). Television credits include The Fall (BBC), Humans (Channel 4), Sense 8 (Netflix), Mr Selfridge (ITV) and Quirke (BBC). Film credits include The Duchess, Me and Orson Welles, Killing Bono and Late Bloomers.

Tara Fitzgerald will play Elizabeth I, returning to the Globe after appearing as Lady Macbeth in 2016. Tara’s recent stage credits include Gaslight (Northampton Royal), The Winter’s Tale (RSC), Broken Glass (West End), and A Doll’s House (Donmar). Screen credits include Churchill’s Secret (ITV), The Musketeers (BBC), Legend, Child 44 and Exodus: Gods and Kings. She recently played the role of Selyse Baratheon in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Abraham Popoola will play John Ballard, having appeared as Badvoc in the Globe’s production of Boudica this summer. He also won Best Actor in The Stage Debut Awards last month. Previous theatre work includes Othello (English Touring Theatre) and TheCrossings Plays (Royal Court). The role of Pooley will be played by Edmund Kingsley. Edmund’s previous stage work includes Seven Acts of Mercy, Hecuba (RSC), The Keepers of Infinite Space (Park Theatre) and Dangerous Corner (Salisbury Playhouse). Television work includes Jekyll & Hyde, Breathless (ITV) and Life in Squares (BBC). Film credits include Madness in the Method, Interlude in Prague, Hernalsian Elysium and An Ordinary Man.

Cassie Layton will play Frances. Cassie’s credits include Persuasion (Royal Exchange), Macbeth (Young Vic), Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare’s Globe), and Lovesick (Netflix). Radio work for the BBC includes Home Front, Cassandra at the Wedding, Pilgrim, Chiwawa, Clayton Grange and The Pursued. Colin Ryan will play the role of Phelippes. Colin’s recent theatre credits include Snow in Midsummer, Volpone, Love’s Sacrifice, The Jew of Malta (RSC), MacbethThe Lightning Child (Shakespeare’s Globe). Television work includes Doctor Who (BBC). Ian Redford will play Sir William Cecil, Topcliffe and Palmer. He last appeared at the Globe in 2010’s Romeo & Juliet. Other theatre credits include Antigone (Royal Exchange), Branded (Old Vic) and All My Sons (Leicester Curve). His screen credits include King Charles III (BBC), New Tricks (BBC), Party Animals (BBC) and Coronation Street (ITV).

Barrie Rutter to play The Emperor in Shakespeare’s Globe’s and Northern Broadsides’ co-production of The Captive Queen

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced that Barrie Rutter will play the role of The Emperor in his forthcoming production of The Captive Queen, a Shakespeare’s Globe and Northern Broadsides co-production in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

In addition to his career as an actor in the National Theatre and the RSC, Barrie is best known as the founder of multi-award-winning touring company Northern Broadsides. Based in the historic Dean Clough in West Yorkshire, the company has built up a formidable reputation, with a repertoire combining Shakespeare, European and English Classic plays, as well as new writing. Productions are noted for their distinctive northern voice, strong musicality and clear narrative journey.

On stage, Barrie has played roles ranging from Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Prospero in The Tempest (Northern Broadsides) to Hobson in Hobson’s Choice(Sheffield Crucible) and Napoleon in Animal Farm (National Theatre). He is currently touring in the Northern Broadsides production of For Love or Money by Blake Morrison. Barrie’s television credits include PorridgeThe Liver Birds (BBC) and Fat Friends (ITV). In 2003, Barrie won the Sam Wanamaker Award, and in 2015, he received an OBE for services to the arts. The Captive Queen will mark his final production with Northern Broadsides, where he will step down as Artistic Director in April 2018.

A reimagining of John Dryden’s Restoration drama Aureng-zebe (1675), The Captive Queen is set in the woollen mills of the North of England in the late 20th century, but retains a flavour of Dryden’s original Mughal Indian setting. An ageing Emperor and his Governor rage at the loss of their youth and beauty, whilst two fratricidal sons are spurred from victory in war to the warfare of love. All four are besotted with the same captive queen in this wry exploration of the folly of old age, the allure of power, and the bewildering effects of lust and desire.

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced that Gina McKee will be playing the title role in Eleanor Rhode’s forthcoming production of Tristan Bernays’ new play Boudica, opening Friday 8 SeptemberThe final production of Emma Rice’s Summer of Love season, Boudicacharts the story of one of Britain’s most famous warrior queens.

Gina McKee is well-known for a huge range of roles across stage and screen, having appeared in award-winning films such as Notting HillAtonement and In The Loop, and television dramas such as Line of Duty (BBC), Vera (ITV), Hebburn (BBC), The Borgias(Showtime) and most recently, Emerald City (NBC). On stage, she played Queen Elizabeth in Jamie Lloyd’s Richard III at Trafalgar Studios, Goneril in Michael Grandage’s King Lear at the Donmar Warehouse and Anne in Lyndsey Turner’s Faith Healer at the Donmar Warehouse last year.

Joan Iyiola will play Boudica’s daughter, Alonna, having starred in Omeros at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (2015). Other theatre credits include The Convert (Gate Theatre), They Drink It In The Congo (Almeida), You’re so Relevant (Young Vic) and A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream (RSC). Recent television work includes Black Earth Rising (BBC/Netflix), NewBlood (BBC) and Yonderland (Sky). Blodwynn, also Boudica’s daughter, will be played by Natalie Simpson. Natalie’s recent theatre work includes The Cardinal (Southwark Playhouse), King LearCymbelineHamlet (RSC) and Measure for Measure (Young Vic).

Forbes Masson will play Cunobeline. Recent theatre credits include Terror (Lyric Hammersmith), Travesties (Menier Chocolate Factory/Apollo Theatre), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theatre Royal Bath), Doctor Faustus (Duke of York’s Theatre), Mr Foote’s Other Leg(Hampstead/Theatre Royal Haymarket), The Ruling Class and Richard III (Trafalgar Studios).
