ACT and TERMINAL 3 by Lars Norén – a double-bill of hard hitting and deceptively simple short plays from Swedish master-playwright Lars Norén, directed by Anthony Neilson.

Lars Norén – playwright, poet and novelist – is thought by many to be the greatest living Swedish writer. For many years Artistic Director of the Riksteatern, the National Touring Theatre of Sweden, his work is hugely influential, interrogating the human psyche in a style that veers between realism and fantasy, with devastating results.  An heir to August Strindberg, this is the literary tradition behind the much-acclaimed Nordic-noir drama.   “Considered the most important playwright since August Strindberg in his native Sweden.” New York Times

Reimagined in a near future USA in the aftermath of a second civil warAct is a prescient interrogation of faith, conscience and atrocity and what is excusable during war. In a hospital examination room, a doctor assesses a female prisoner, accused of being a terrorist and now on hunger strike.

Then, storylines intertwine in Terminal 3. A young couple await the birth of their first child, while in the same place two people wait to identify the body of their dead son. What truths emerge from the birth – and death – of a child? How does the birth – and death – of a child affect the lives and relationships of the parents?

Anthony Neilson is one of the most extraordinary – and controversial – dramatists working today. His previous work, including The Prudes, Narrative, Unreachable and Relocated at the Royal Court Theatre, The Wonderful World of Dissocia and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Royal Lyceum Edinburgh and Realism at the Edinburgh International Festival.

The cast will be Barnaby Power, Robert Stocks, Temi Wilkey and Hannah Young.

Design is by Laura Hopkins, with lighting by Chahine Yavroyan.

Barnaby Power – previously worked with Anthony Neilson in Narrative and Wonderful World of Dissocia at the Royal Court Theatre. Other stage appearances include Laurel and Hardy, Faust, Charlie Sonata and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh); Removal Men (The Yard Theatre); Interiors; The Destroyed Room (Vanishing Point/Edinburgh International Festival); Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night (RSCand Somersaults (National Theatre of Scotland).

Robert Stocks – Theatre credits include Warburg in Mrs Orwell (the Old Red Lion and Southwark Playhouse), Seppings in Jeeves and Wooster (World Tour) and Hare in The Butcher and the Thief (Edinburgh Festival)
His previous credits with Anthony Neilson include Bernard in Get Santa (The Royal Court) and Bufty in The Menu (National Studio).

Temi Wilkey – trained at Cambridge University. Her theatre credits include: Jubilee (Lyric Hammersmith, Royal Exchange); Hamlet and Cymbeline (RSC), The Comedy of Errors (National Theatre); and How To Hold Your Breath (Royal Court); TV credits include Manhunt (ITV)

Print Room at the Coronet will present a year of outstanding and emotionally vivid new international performance by some of the world’s greatest most creative minds.

3 new commissions will play alongside UK premieres of productions from world-leading companies, and the Print Room at the Coronet welcomes the return of choreographer Russell Maliphant.

Artistic Director Anda Winters said – ‘I love the way theatre from other cultures presents universal feelings and experiences in different ways – ways that can be both interesting and enlightening
to us. These are plays from around the world that look at the inner working of the human soul, performed in startling, visceral productions that take you into other minds in startling and sometimes shocking ways, and ask questions that we all grapple with. I am delighted to bring such very accomplished writers, directors and performers to the Print Room at the Coronet as we bring this wonderful building back to life.’

The acclaimed Russell Maliphant Company presents four duets: the world premiere of a new dance choreographed by Russell Maliphant and performed by him and Dana Fouras; the male duet Critical Mass (performed by Russell Maliphant and Dickson Mbi); Still (Dickson Mbi and Grace Jabbari); Two Times Two (Dana Fouras and Grace Jabbari).

To accompany the duets Russell Maliphant Company will present a video installation by Maliphant and Fouras of a work conceived and shot by Tim Etchells and Hugo Glendinning on location in the Irish Sea.

THE COMET Inspired by the life and work of Bruno Schulz

As news spreads across town that a fatal comet is hurtling towards the earth, the townspeople enter into a festive mood, excited for the coming catastrophe. Only a newcomer to the town, Uncle Edward, is prepared to sound the alarm…

A UK premiere inspired by the life and work of Bruno Schulz from acclaimed Polish directors Teresa and Andrzej Welminski. Based on The Comet and other stories by Bruno Schulz. With extraordinary humour and stagecraft, the Welminskis bring Schulz’s absurd, mythical, yet terrifyingly current tale to life. Informed by the work of revolutionary theatre practitioner Tadeusz Kantor. Performed in English and Polish with English surtitles.

The performances will be preceded by the Quay Brothers film STREET OF CROCODILES 21 March at 6.30pm, 22-24 March at 7pm

Allmers returns home from a writing retreat to his wife and only child, the crippled Eyolf. He has abandoned his life’s literary work for a new vocation: to devote himself to caring for his son. But one event will change the course of his life forever. Little Eyolf is a haunting portrait of a marriage in crisis and the agony of acts and words that can never be undone.

Presented by the National Theatre of Norway, this stunning production shows this lesser known play to be one of Ibsen’s masterpieces of modern theatre. This production is funded by The InterNational Foundation.

Following the Beckett In London festival at the Coronet in 2016, Gare St Lazare Ireland return to the theatre with How It Is (Part One) – one of the most important and powerful prose works in Beckett’s canon.

A man lies in the mud, in the dark. He repeats his life as he hears it, uttered by another voice, telling how it was. Meanwhile memories surface, perhaps, of life above in the light.

Judy Hegarty Lovett and Conor Lovett – artistic director duo of Gare St Lazare Ireland – are widely recognised as the pre-eminent interpreters of Beckett’s prose.

Deceptively simple and darkly funny, a double bill of short plays from Swedish master- playwright Lars Norén, Terminal 3 and Act are fearless inquiries of time, mortality and power.

TERMINAL 3 

“I wonder what they’re doing here…The couple sitting over there.” 

In a hospital, a young couple await the birth of their first child. In the same space, an estranged middle-aged couple wait to identify the body of their dead son. Terminal 3 is a dream-like exploration of loss; a ghost story for the living.

ACT 

“I’ve brought him up to be a good and loyal citizen….I hope he’ll never treat me with the kind of brutality and cruelty that you’re showing your father.”

 The Print Room at the Coronet is delighted to announce the first major UK production of Camus’ masterpiece The Outsider, specially adapted by Booker Prize-winning poet and novelist Ben Okri. Under the unforgiving flood of a Mediterranean sun, The Outsider moves with contradictory force in this ground-breaking production. Meursault is a man who will only speak his truth. In an age where we are being increasingly told what to feel, the story of Meursault is a blast of uncompromising honesty. It is the story of a sun-astonished man prosecuted for killing an Arab, but convicted for not crying at his mother’s funeral. The hypocrisy of society has never been so clearly exposed. Searingly relevant to our increasingly disquieting times.

Albert Camus, novelist, essayist, philosopher, Nobel laureate, and his creation Meursault are twin icons of Twentieth Century literature. Ben Okri, author of The Famished Road, is one of contemporary literature’s most important, and influential, writers. This intriguing new Coronet production brings them together for a rare dramatisation of one of modern literature’s most controversial works.

LOVE LIES BLEEDING by Don DeLillo

“When it stops being unbearable, it becomes something worse. It becomes the air we breathe.”

Artist Alex Macklin moved to the south-western desert, abandoning his easel to make monumental land art. A second major stroke renders him speechless and motionless. He is kept alive by feeding and hydration tubes and desperate fourth wife, Lia. To this remote location comes Alex’s second wife, together with his only son, who has been researching ways on the internet to end his father’s life.

With profound pathos and unsettling humour, DeLillo portrays a modern, fractured family, reunited by one of our time’s most urgent, cruel, yet compassionate questions: Is this still, really, life?

Don DeLillo has received awards and nominations for over 40 prizes including the Pulitzer, PEN/Faulkner and Man Booker International Prize.
